We have been using this Schrade Tough Chip 11 Function Mini-Shear / Multi-Tool with locking blades / implements for safety. The Schrade Tough Chip tool is made of 100% stainless steel in the USA and has a Lifetime Warranty from Schrade. So far it has worked well and been useful. It stays in a backpack that is carried to school (college) by a full time student / dad and gets plenty of use. It has held up well with little damage over time.

I bought this small pocket tool at the local Ace Hardware store. I had been looking for the Swiss made one, but have not found them anywhere in town. So when I saw this one for $16 I bought it right away. It is well made, and the locks are great. The locks hold well and need to be deliberately disengaged. I have used it for a few jobs over the past few weeks and it seems to be holding up well. It is becoming loose, so I would not use it on a keyring. But it really is large to be carried every day. This would go well in a bag. Clipped on a ring in the bag so that the tool is always available but not lost at the bottom of a pocket. It is not heavy, but it is solid steel so it is not light either. This tool is sold as 10 Tools-in-1 with a 1) Knife, 2) Small Phillips screwdriver, 3) Small Flathead screwdriver, 4) Large Flathead screwdriver, 5) Bottle opener, 6) File, 7) Tweezers, 8) Large pliers, 9) Fine pliers, 10) Wire cutters and strippers

We have been looking for a source for these pocket tools and finally found one here in Tucson. The Swiss Tech tools have quite a following online and now there is a local source to buy them without shipping charges. We went to the store and bought a few styles to test out and add to our gear. We started out with the Screwz-All (4-1 tool), Utili-Key (6-1 tool) and Micro-Pro (9-1 tool). They each come in a plastic package with instruction card.

The Camelback H.A.W.G. is a good size pack for hiking and bicycling. The pack is not too large, but it is roomy enough to hold essential gear. In addition it has a pocket for an MP3 player at the top of the bag. This pack holds 100 ounces of water (3 liters) so it is a good choice for hot climates where a lot of water is needed

Many people maintain an emergency bag with essential gear. I use smaller bags inside my main emergency pack so that it is easy to find and there is less chance of loose gear falling out of the pack in the dark, on the move, etc. One of the sub-packs contains communication and signaling items. Here is a breakdown ot the gear I have selected for this pack. Inside an old military pouch I have; 1- The bag, 2- Ranger Pace Beads, 3- GI Compas Pouch (for compass and pace beads), 4- GI Compass, 5- Rhino GPS / Radio, 6- Scanning CB Radio, 7- Digital Camera, 8- NBC decontamination wipe case, 9- Pocket Police Refrence Guide, 10- CB Radio 12 volt power supply cord, 11- GI M-16 magazine pouch (For the CB Radio), 12- Light Sticks
